README.TXT: Hand Family Lineage -- General Sources of Information. Last Revised: 12/27/1996 First, I would like to thank all those out there whose research I have relied upon (and borrowed) for information to put into this database. I am indebted to you for your efforts; for without your tireless hours of effort my efforts would certainly be more difficult. I may not know you personally but I feel we share some kindred in the work we do. I strive to make the information in this database as correct as possible. However, I am certain to make mistakes and I apologize up front for making them. Like most amateur genealogists, I frequently become confused and take misleading paths. I ask anyone, who uses the information in this database to please bring to my attention any errors they may discover. I ask too, for information which other persons may posses that they feel would be pertinent to these family lineages. I have supplemented existing work with my own research from Census records, birth and death and marriage records, obituaries and other sources. I try to carefully check and recheck dates and events across different sources of information; to illustrate this point, I try to list all sources where I find information (including the same information found in different sources). My intentions are to locate all brothers and sisters of my children's immediate ancestors. In doing this, I hope to establish a foundation upon which other living descendants can establish connections into these and other family lines. See also the "Source Material Reference Guide" -- a list of source references and their abbreviations. Evan C. Clements for a copy of the work his daughter, Mary Alice Clements, did for what appears to be a High School Class project. The original work is dated 20 January 1971. This short paper provides many names and a few dates that fill in much needed information that I lacked prior to obtaining a copy of this material. The source note notation for this material is "MAC1971". ACKERMAN AND LARKIN FAMILY LINES: Many gracious thanks to Herman Joseph McAtee for a copy of his database providing much of the data on the Larkin family lineage. Thanks too, for the loan of his Montgomery-Larkin family album prepared by Estella Montgomery of Los Angeles, CA. This album provided additional information about the Larkin family lines. And, thanks to all of those people who contributed to Estella's work. Also, my extreme gratitude goes to Herman Joseph McAtee for the loan of his "St. John Catholic Cemetery Loogootee, IN." book which is not in general circulation at the time of this writing (March 1993). This book has provided me with much information without the need for very much research -- a source of well research and assembled information. Father Leo Hagerty has supplemented my database with information he has provided. My thanks to Father Leo. ARVIN FAMILY LINE: Thanks to Lucile Arvin whose personal records provided quite a bit of insight into the Arvin Families (March 1993). Even though Lucile cannot prove without a doubt my Arvin lineage is related to hers, I am indebted to her for the information she has provided. For anyone of future generations who might run across Lucile's research and this, I must point out some differences in the information. Several Arvin family members are buried in St. Rose Cemetery at Springfield, KY not at Bardstown, KY as Lucile has recorded. I prefer to use Springfield because this is the closest town to the rural St. Rose Church. Looking over the St. Rose Church records I found several family member's baptismal dates and Lucile has these same dates listed as birth dates. Even though these dates may truly be birth dates I prefer to list them as baptismal dates because it was baptismal records where I found the data. Lucile Arvin has noted in her records the misspelling of the Arvin name. My wife and I spent the weekend of April 3, 1993, in Bardstown and Springfield KY doing Arvin research. We too, found misspelling of the Arvin name; we found the following spellings -- ARVIN, ARVEN and HARVIN. I believe this is the same family line and the name spelling was misinterpreted between old-day text and modern-day text transcribing. CISSELL FAMILY GENEALOGY: The CISSELL family genealogy was provided to me by Mr. Terry Cissell. Terry lives in Louisville, KY, and has been doing CISSELL research since 1976. Many gracious thanks must go out to Terry and all of the hard work he has done on this family line. Terry's contribution is denoted with the "TCDec1996" symbol. According to Terry there were several CISSELL family lines that moved around some, originally moving from Maryland to Kentucky. He has traced some families then moving out of Kentuky to other states and back. Apparently the family of James Cissell and Elizabeth Edelen was one of those families. I have supplemented this work with my own research and family records. I have only listed the sources for that information which I have provided. EPHRIAM AND MARY SMITH DESCENDANTS: Little was known about the Smith family line, however, at least two living descendant of this line claims that according to family-lore they are descendants of the Captain John Smith who helped to establish Jamestown, PA, the first English settlement in America. This is truly quite a unique claim, one I feel not too many family lines can claim. It is my every intent to prove this family connection. Thanks to Norma Louise Williams-Ritter for her information about the Smith-Williams family lineage. Her information provides a good picture of her immediate family lineage. HAND FAMILY LINE: Information for this family line was provided by family records in my possession and my own research. I am attempting to locate living descendants and share this information with them. My research began with this family line and little was recorded about my immediate ancestry. Much of this information was obtained through long hours of research in the local libraries. HELM FAMILY LINE: Information for this family line was provided by family records in Janet Hope (Helm) Larkin's possession and my own research. Janet Hope Helm too has a unique family claim in that according to family-lore she is related to the General George Gordon Meade that defeated General Lee at the battle of Gettysburg. I too, hope to prove this claim. On 27 April 1993, I have in my possession a picture of General George Meade (Meads) with a note inscribed by Gertrude Gaither Helm stating the following: "My mother's, mother was married to Gen. Mead's brother in 1876. Her name was (Jane Ashcraft) Mead."-- signed, Gertrude Gaither Helm. Please note the following discrepancies: a. The spelling of the General's last name is MEADE while in the family line it is spelled MEADS (MEADS appears on local and State records of the HELM family line). b. Jane Ashcraft and John B. MEADE (MEADS) were married 5 Jul 1845 and not in 1876 (I do not yet know the reason for this difference). JONES FAMILY LINE: The primary source for this family line from about 1986 back to James Massey Jones is research performed by Natalie Montgomery Baker and Henry J. Jones. This work was published as a family history titled "Descendants of James Massey Jones". When entering this work into computer form I noticed several discrepancies, I strive to explain all or correct what I could. I have supplemented this work with my own research and family records. I have only listed the sources for that information which I have provided.
