Cemeteries of Mt. Pleasant, Martin, County, IN I undertake this volunteer work in an effort to help record some of the early genealogy history of Martin County, IN. This work represents not only the many hours that I have contributed but also early work performed by other residents of Martin County. This book covers the three early cemeteries located at Mt. Pleasant. One of the cemeteries, Reily Cemetery, is still occasionally being used. Three cemeteries are located at Mt. Pleasant: (1) St. Rose, (2) Brooks, (3) Reily. A separate listing is provided for each cemetery. This work presents a fourth listing simply named Mt. Pleasant. Mt. Pleasant is not a real cemetery. During this research information was uncovered recording the fact that a person was buried somewhere at Mt. Pleasant with the cemetery name not being mentioned. It is these entries that you will find in the Mt. Pleasant listing. Each cemetery listing began with the original work performed by the Martin County Historical Society between 1963 and 1971. This original work was entered into a computer database. The original work was then systematically compared to the tombstone inscriptions as they survive today. Corrections were made wherever possible. Several new entries were made too. The three cemeteries suffer varying degrees of neglect and erosion. Entries are annotated as to whether the tombstone still exists or is now missing. Local records were then searched for additional information. I would like to acknowledge the contributions and say thank you for help provided by the following organizations and individuals: The Martin County Historical Society, The Martin County Genealogy Society, The Shoals Library, Natalie Montgomery Baker, Deloris Sherfick, Herman J. McAtee, Robert Green and my family who helped me with the field research in the cemeteries. I apologize to anyone whom I have inadvertently failed to mention. Every precaution was taken to record factual information. Data sources are also included in the cemetery listings. Each cemetery listing has its own preface that explains the data source annotations. Care was taken not to introduce new errors, however, with work such as this errors inevitably do creep in. I apologize for errors that I may have introduced. My plans are to eventually produce plot maps of the three cemeteries. This work is progressing very slowly as I am only dedicating my spare time to this effort. I am releasing this information at this time because much new information was uncovered and I feel there may be someone out there who would be interested in it. I hope you find this work helpful and interesting. Evan C. Hand
