27 Feb 1996: Catherine GIBNEY is my gg-grandmother. I am seeking any information that I can get about this woman and the GIBNEY family name around the year 1850. It has been suggested that Catherine was an orphan, however, I am not sure about that. What I do know is that Catherine was living with another family in the 1860 U.S. census of Floyd County, IN. See born note #3. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Catherine (middle name Martha or Margaret) GIBNEY was born between 1844/1845 in Pennsylvania (see birth notes); died on 3 Dec 1879 in Montgomery, Daviess County, IN; buried in St. Peter's Cemetery, Montgomery, IN (see note). She married John Patrick HAND on 8 Feb 1863 in Holy Trinity, Church, New Albany, Floyd County, IN. They had the following children: Margaret E. HAND (b. Oct 1863), John ?. HAND (b. ABT 1866), Anna Augusta HAND (Annie) (b. 25 Jan 1868), James Patrick HAND (b. 15 Aug 1869), Thomas Francis HAND (Frank) (b. ABT 1871), George Edward(?) HAND (b. 10 Feb 1874), William Joseph HAND (b. 11 Apr 1878), Catherine Matilda HAND (b. 22 Oct 1879). Individual note: (1) The surname of GIBNEY can be found in historical records around the Lexington, KY, area. I suspect this is where Catherine is from. (12/27/1993 -- after a day long search in New Albany, IN, no additional information could be located on Catherine's birthplace.) (2) The HAND's lived briefly in New Albany, IN, and I suspect this is where John Patrick HAND and Catherine GIBNEY met and were possibly married. (12/27/1993 -- today this suspicion was confirmed.) (3) The Washington Democrat, 06 Dec 1879; Obituary -- "Mrs John Han, of Montgomery Station died Wednesday morning of typhoid fever". CN: "Han" in this obituary should be spelled "Hand". (4) INTV -- Kendall U. and Dorthea Jean Williams, 13 Oct 1995, family bible has Catherine GIBNEY's given name noted as "Margaret". (5) I am wondering if Catherine GIBNEY was an orphan when she met John and subsequently married. Born note: (1) 1870 Daviess County, IN, Census records indicate Catherine was born in Kentucky, location unknown. (2) Individual note (2) gives birth place of Martha Gibney as "New Albany, Floyd County, IN". (3) 1860 Indiana Census, South -- page 106; lists Catherine Gibney, age 15, female, born in Pennsylvania. Died note: (1) See individual note #3. Buried note: (1) Probably St. Peter's Cemetery, Montgomery, IN, because Montgomery is where the family lived at the time of Catherine's death. Individual source: (1) Family Records -- ECHNov1993. (2) Marriage record of William Joseph HAND give parents names (DCMR, book 11, page 133). (3) The Daviess County Democrat, 06 Dec 1879. (4) INTV -- Kendall U. and Dorthea Jean Williams, 13 Oct 1995.
